WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES?
In today’s world, the amount of stress a person is under can
seem overwhelming. Economic hardships, health concerns, family difficulties,
marital issues, and relationship problems abound. Behavioral health services
can benefit anyone who feels depressed, sad or anxious, has difficulty coping, is
experiencing issues related to pregnancy and/or coping with a newborn or a
difficult to soothe baby. It can be difficult to know how to discipline a child
that has difficulty concentrating and/or can’t sit still. Another major
stressor is coping with grief due to the loss of a loved one. The grieving
process can be a long a complicated one. All of these issues can tax a person’s
ability to cope with life and may eventually affect your personal and work
life.

DOES IT MEAN I’M CRAZY IF I SEE A THERAPIST OR A
PSYCHIATRIST?
No, this is a common misconception. It actually takes a brave person to realize that they need assistance in coping with what is happening in their lives. Sometimes people realize that they are too timid, have poor communication skills which causes work and/or relationship problems, have lost the ability to enjoy activities, sleep too much and feel sad or depressed, feel anxious or have noticed that they have become emotionally sensitive. Sometimes a family member or friend expresses concern and recommends therapy.
WHAT IS THERAPY?
We are asked this question often. Therapy consists of talking about factors having a negative impact on your life with a caring, objective person who can assist you in tapping into your inner strengths, and developing new resources and coping skills.
HOW DO YOU DO THERAPY WITH CHILDREN?
We use a variety of techniques when working with children
depending on what issues the child or family is having with the child. Often
used techniques are play therapy, drawings, talking, and playing therapeutic
games to name a few. Incorporating the family in child therapy is also
essential. For example, we teach parents how to properly use the time out
technique, for how long, and usual pitfalls if done incorrectly. Each child is
unique and is treated as such.
